The current state of the Club is at a crossroads – membership declining and no new blood to take the place of this natural attrition. Why? Because we are out of touch. Any attempt to modernize or change to meet challenges has in the past been met with resistance and reluctance to make meaningful change. The premise on which the Club came into being has long since become obsolete, yet we have continued to travel the same path trading on the mistaken belief that to do otherwise would be to abandon tradition.

The traditions of the Club are important and the dominating reason many of us joined in the first place; however the declining membership attendance threatens the possibility we can cover the costs of future mess nights.

What to do?

Pull up stakes and donate our wealth to a deserving organization?

The few meet periodically and whittle down our bank balance until nothing is left?

Both options would have varying levels of support I would guess.

Speaking personally I am now spending the bulk of my time in northern California, in addition to living life with Eileen's health care issues that require periodic visits to Cedars Sinai. We are all facing similar constraints at our stage in life and there is no-one that I know of waiting in the wings to take our places.

There is no question in my mind that I would like the Club to survive but I have no sustainable suggestions of how that can happen.

But being the optimist I will continue to think of how it may do so.
